What are the first things you think of when you think of Christmas? The Christmas tree, the presents, baking Christmas goodies, a candle lit service at a church somewhere?
Okay I realize I probably should have written this weeks ago BUT... Here we are the 26th of December in the middle of the Christmas season..
Not everyone has lovely memories of Christmas. Maybe you grew up or are in a family where Christmas was more about people's anger or just about stuff. Maybe everyone got drunk. Maybe you have love ones that have died either this year or in previous years. Maybe you've experienced the pain of losing a child or even the pain of infertility.
Christmas (or the holidays) can be a tender point otherwise know as a "Trigger". Emotions can be prone to flaring up. Trust me
At our house we have experienced all of the above. We both came from large extended families. Personally I have some bad memories of Christmas for reasons I cannot explain or talk about.
After we were married in 1997 we moved to the Carolina's in March of 1998 from California.
We went through several years of infertility and a miscarriage before conceiving Jonathan who was born in 2006.
OK I know there are a lot of websites you can go to to help you deal with stress specific to what you are dealing with.
We have children prone to respiratory problems. Christmas is in the middle of RSV season... (RSV is like a cold but the mucous is more like molasses and is thicker and can cause some kids major, major problems)
Here are some general coping strategies we use to get through holidays and anniversaries (otherwise known as an angelversary)
1. If you don't feel like you won't be able to deal with all the various people you'll run into (and the unfortunate comments that come with that): Don't sweat it. Don't feel guilty for not going.
(I had trouble going anywhere for a while after having my first miscarriage)
Although you might catch some grief. You do what is best for you..
2. If there is a health concern (I.e RSV with Jonathan and Daniel)
You can set limits. If you know someone is sick and they're still going to be at a social interaction (tsk tsk tsk shame on them stupid people) STAY AWAY from them.
Carry hand sanitizer with you and if they ask to directly interact, do a brief scan and trust your gut with who's sick, and if they are well, give them some hand sanitizer and discourage them doing anything on your kids hands. Little kids typically put their hands in their mouth.
Some folks WON'T believe you at all and will think you are paranoid. In that case you have to use literally what your doctor says. Most people believe you if you say your doctor said it (although you already have heard your doctor preach about prematurity issues and RSV and how serious it can be).
3. You can create new traditions.
For us we try to keep things low key. We don't set up the tree until a couple of days until Christmas.
We also don't put presents under out tree until Christmas eve (late). Our kids don't see presents until it's time to rip into them.
Some years we go away for the holiday. We were going to do that this year but decided this next year is going to be crazy busy with moving etc, that we just need to focus on our family.
4. Give yourself and Loved ones near and dear to you some grace and space as people tend to deal with things different. This is quite true with grief and loss. Be kind to each other. Share great memories together.
Although I am not against having a drink with Dinner...I am against drinking more alcohol than I know is appropriate. I do not need to feel buzzed to enjoy a meal..
Some people can handle it but coupled with the above; it could create more problems than it's worth.
For those we hold dear we wish you all a Merry Christmas and a Happy, Healthy and Prosperous new year.
May 2010 be beetter to you than 2009 was.
In Memorium: Larry Wentz, Deke Dursteler(son of Toni Dursteler), Victoria Martinsen and Douglas R. Toohey (Father of Cynthia Toohey Kelley)
Please Pray for: Fred Pitts, the Toohey/Kelley family, and a friends named Christy. You can always pray for Donna Haggard who over Thanksgiving had to have 5 pints of blood transfused (the body holds 6).. We pray for a quick healing and for Cancer to die off and stay that way.
There are numerous other folks We wish to honor at this time who have recently lost babies and our hearts are with you..
LOVE always and Blessings

Jonathan and Daniel's Best Day EVER...
As you see. Jonathan is a very loving, cute and wild little boy. He just got cuter! He got his first pair of glasses.
Of course the journey to get here has been quite a ride but overall... we wouldn't change a thing.
Yesterday Jonathan had his parents in tears. They were happy tears at the discovery of something he had made at school. It was a Christmas ornament. It had a picture of him in his dress up character.
When we gave birth to him in 2006 we at times thought this would never be happening to us. He's bringing stuff he made home from school. May God be the Glorified as the maker of Miracles. :)
I think we are still going through his Terrible two's. I think it has caught up with us, and we are loving him through this.
Some days are better than others but overall I think he's a keeper.
He has loved his little brother since the day he met him. Why that sticks out to me I don't know. He wanted to hold him from the word go. We have seen an over abundance of love instead of anything we would call aggressive.
Daniel continues to astound me with the wonders that he just does. He is now taking six and seven steps between objects. This might not be an awe struck moment to anyone else, but I guess having a child like Jonathan might make me appreciate things like walking and talking. Jonathan had to seriously go through therapy and actually work at this stuff. Daniel just seems to be doing it all on his own.
This is REDEMPTION.
Daniel and Jonathan are adding vocabulary at a similar pace like I was told MIGHT happen. Daniel's newest word is UP (with perfect diction) . I was told Daniel might help Jonathan or vice versa because it takes two to have a conversation.
We are still trying to figure out what he's into (besides Daddy's AV and computer stuff). He's figured out how to open all of our saved bookmarks all at once, and find firefox help. I've yet to figure out how he did it.
Okay, I'll wait for some of you to stop rolling on the floor laughing and come back.
He loves trucks.
Jonathan has gotten into Phineas and Ferb on the Disney channel along with Thomas the Tank engine.
Thanks Brooks and Cynthia... He doesn't have a huge vocabulary so Phineas sticks out. Trust me.
A great Progress note: He made the sign for Change (or potty) when he had a soaked diaper. This was a huge day for us as we now know that he knows when he's wet or soiled.
Peace and Love.
Be richly blessed in this holday seasom

Prayer Update:
We are sad to report that Cynthia Kelley's Dad, Douglas Toohey Passed away peacefully at the age of 80 on December 17th . He was a Husband, a father, a Father-in-Law, and a grandfather to many. He will be greatly missed and our family's sympathies go out to the Kelley/Toohey family. They would greatly appreciate your continued prayers and thoughts for their family.
Peace and Love.
Be richly blessed in this holday seasom

Jonathan's Christmas Party
Christmas Party-
This comes with a story that starts out with us being confused...
I got a note saying his class was going to a party at the Moose lodge... I was thinking it was the whole school... Later I found out : NOPE... The Local Elk lodge does a yearly party for all of the School district's Exceptional Children from Pre-k-5th grade. We got there and Jonathan was in rare form... running everywhere. dancing...mainly chasing other kids (big kids). I put Daniel on my hip and ran after him after I saw him take a nasty spill from another kid. This happened again like I thought it would and although I pleaded with him he only sat down after the second incident.
A couple other parents that I recognized from Jonathan's class came and reserved a table. We all sat together.
They fed us lunch although by the end of it the kids liked the potato chips more than the hot dog.
Andrew would have liked it. of course at some point someone spilled juice (fruit punch). That's why I think everyone at some point before got a hunk of napkins. ;)
I talked to a mom and she gave me a couple of ideas to try while we are gone. I also talked to another mom who goes to the same eye doctor in a different office.
They had Santa come all the way from the North Pole...
He gave him a car :) (someone had to have told him)
I will be having a give away after Christmas... Stay tuned. It's nice!

Monday
It was almost enough for me to write a "Not me Monday" but it ended well...
I got up earlier than I normally do so I could get the kids up and dressed so we could leave early and head on out to Daniel's doctor visit in the Steele Creek (Rivergate) area.
Only thing was our MILK had totally curdled (prematurely) due to our fridge had totally lost it's mind and the temp gauge read 63f. It just had a few things because we are ready to go to the store and shop for our trip. did a couple of adjustments, flipped the breaker and prayed that it would come back to life. Texted Andrew so he was aware (although he already knew about it).
So I couldn't do a sippy cup for Daniel or Cereal for Jonathan. Plan b was a jelly sandwich.
It would have been a pb&j BUT a kid in his class has a severe allergy to peanuts and Just the smell makes that kid need emergency treatment. We've lived with food allergies and want to show respect and empathy.
Baths were done in the usual fashion with the usual drama. sorta glad my neighbors can't hear me.
Got ready to go hoping things would get better.
Finally wrestled Daniel into his car seat and Jonathan finally got in and buckled.
turned on the engine and got going. turned on Christian radio... even they were participating in the Tiger Woods Gossip. I got so sick I turned the channel.
Puhhhlease.
The Pediatrician
Well I hope I spell it right because most of the time I just shorten it and call it the Pedi.
Our pedi just moved to a brand new office after spending the last year sharing space with an urgent care. Sorta like having an office in an expanded closet and one waiting area (sick or well it didn't matter).
Being it was our first time there, I had to figure out where it was, where the elevator was.
I had my sit and stand stroller. Daniel was in front and Jonathan was in back.
This stroller is a bit of trouble and we are still trying to get Jonathan to not escape (especially in crowded places)
We checked in and waited. I never said we sat down because Jonathan runs around like a wild animal. I told him that it wasn't for him and he settled down. You might chuckle but he has a wee bit of anxiety about doctors... totally understandable knowing him.
Got called in. Made our way into an expansive hall. Weighed Daniel only after he let go of me. 27 pounds 6 ounces. Got into the exam room and Jonathan was his usual self with the doctor chair(moving it all over).
Doctor Smoak came in... examined Daniel. He's all good now. YAY!
He Shared some great news that he adopted a newborn named Jonathan... showed me a picture of the cutest little face.
I told him I was happy for him and how much I love adoption. I love this pedi...
Got everyone back in the stroller, got in our car.
Came home for a bit. When it was time got back in the car and took J. to school. He was tired. He was terrible but like magic when his teacher came he sprouted a halo and tossed his devil horns off(behind the seat). He's never misbehaved for her.
Came home and cleaned the fridge. The fridge began to work again.
Daniel went down for his nap (during the time Jonathan is in school-Daniel chose this probably because no one would be there to bug him)
I was able to check on my email and messages.
Eventually I have to go outside and fetch Jonathan from the bus. He always gives me hugs.
We came in and I had crescent rolls that had been baked. he ate them happily and I gave him some tea.
The rest of the day was full of having two kids under 4.
Andrew came home and the elementary/middle school aged kid who comes to beg for money came as soon as he saw Andrew's car. I yelled at him to go away and to stop begging people for money. I wish there were adults who cared for this kid. I told him if he did this again I would call the cops. He has been warned/talked to many times. I think his adult heard all of this. I hope they were at minimum embarrassed . He came back. I kept playing "What would I do if this were my kid",( I would find a way to get him into a reform school or a summer camp or counseling.) I felt bad for doing that but his adults need a way to know what he is doing and how disturbing this is. He apologised but he has before so go figure.
I care about people no matter who they are so this was a stretch for me. I grew up with very little supervision and although I had some adults who cared about me it wasn't who I expected..
We made dinner and here I am writing.
Be blessed.
Please pray for a friend of ours named Cynthia. Her Father went into hospice and things don't look positive. Pray for her mom and the rest of the family (especially since this is around the Holidays) I can't give you details due to respect for privacy and if you pray, Don't you think God knows what they need, anyway?
They need a ton of peace and grace to get through this. Trust me, watching a loved one slip away slowly is more frightful and agonizing even for the strongest Christian.
We have been family (close friends) with them for nearly 13 years. We were at their church wedding in 2001. Her husband was at ours in 1997. We met Brooks through a mutual friend.
I would do anything for them and go anywhere (as we have).
The only thing we can do right now is Pray/Think about them. That is the most powerful and significant thing. She would appreciate it. :)
Be blessed and Just Be

(Q & A) aka: Comments
Waiting for the Q & A to begin. I will post Questions and answers here.
Watch this while you write...
9 pm- Someone left me a message... I'm guessing I am familiar with this person and I think I know his/her name.
I love my friends comments...especially the ones that make me tear up... It doesn't get any more encouraging than this..
babs has left a new comment on your post "Question and Answer":
OK, I'm coming clean!!! It's me... I read your work all the time. I've watched your family blossom into something only God can do.
You are truly blessed, but, I don't need to tell you what you already know.
I know you're only steps away from soaring!!!! I gain strength from everything you post: From your lowest moment to your day out with Andrew and the kids.
It's sort of like reality TV without sitting and watching which makes it better.
Trina, you are a true gift to me. I appreciate you sharing your life with us. Keep up the great work and let me know when you need me to start "Proofreading" :)
Thank you so much Babs

Question and Answer
OK for all of you who read this Whether you are KNOWN to me or NOT.(not is a bit creepy so please tell me or Andrew- Or leave comments)..
Here is a serious challenge to you.
Monday afternoon (after 4:30 ET-Eastern) I will be taking and answering Questions both in my comment box and at my house... (only those too chicken to leave a message on here or don't want to register- you might already have my phone # ;)..(call me... did I say that?(who took my strikeout text)
We are installing a Magic Jack in the next couple of days... I will get our new # to those that normally have my #.
one of my readers has been consistently asking: When's the book coming out...
My answer is there is no book in the works and although I love to write...My time is currently micro managed (by my kids and me).
As an aside I have been writing secondary to this blog and when I'm ready I can compile that into chapters and viola... Your book.
I'd much rather co-author with someone else that I have been trying to get to write myself so this must be sowing and reaping.
This is just a teaser but feel free to ask (but nothing too embarrassing)
Blessings on your journey

MMMMmmm
Here's a recipe you'll love... It's a Chicken Marsala recipe for the crockpot that I saw on another blog... I am all about saving time.
Totally yummy... You should try it. You will love this. Word to the wise. Don't use cooking Marsala- It's too salty. Use the real stuff.
Have a great day.
You can get Marsala at a liquor store usually under 7.00 ( at least Andrew did)

Barbara's Wedding
*I have a dear friend by the name of Barbara. Andrew and I have known her for about as long as we have been in this area.(almost 12 years) In fact she works with him.
There was a time she and I had a conversation that led me to another doctor that told us to not give up on us wanting to have our own children.
After we had Daniel she staked her claim and loves to watch our kids. Jonathan Loves her so very much. He calls her Aunt Barbara.
This last weekend she got married to a man who really loves her, named George.
I have pictures but due to the fact that we believe the photographer covered the windows with a cheesey looking red film to achieve "white balance" everything turned out RED. I have spent many hours using Gimp and using search engines to see if there was a way to "get the red out".
I have made black and white photos out of a lot but several came out super after making major adjustmentsafter cussing at Gimp's steep learning curve.
I have to personally say shame on the photographer for using that particular color. He could have used blue or even green or even Yellow... I can guarantee a lot of people's pictures didn't turn out in the church.
When we got there; and it took a while because it was out in the sticks a few. 10 miles from the nearest podunk town (one stoplight and the city hall has attached to a tiny post office). Click here for definition of Podunk
We probably got there too early and should have let some of our kids energy out. By the time I decided to take Daniel out so we wouldn't cause a disruption to the festivities it was too late.
We worked our way to the Foyer only to be in the middle of the wedding party lining up to start. I was lets just say a little embarrassed. They got going and all I could say was WOW from the word Go. From the gospel choir to the flowers. It was neat.
One thing that totally got me while I was in the foyer with Daniel was when the Bride (Barbara)came out. She was absolutely stunning, and the look on Daniel's face was absolutely PRICELESS.He recognized her and was stunned. I had tears in my eyes and all I could do was smile at her.(sadly no camera for that moment) This reminded me of our wedding 12 years ago. Andrew actually got a glimpse of her face in this moment.
I watched as her grown son Dontavius walk her down the aisle. Very fitting. She sang a duet with the groom to get her down the aisle. All I could say is if your could feel LOVE and the Lord it was right then. :)
Many other things happened but Here's a Jonathan funny:
Other than Jonathan being excited and tired that day... He did well through the wedding. The reception however was another story but is so cute. We were sat at a table with a bunch of strangers... Many knew the groom. we were okay.
During dinner, Jonathan had to be coaxed out from underneath the table. It was a nice dinner(Thank God for salad and fruit though). Later in that series Barbara and George were cutting the cake in the corner of the room. Joanthan went around the table and started making signs (for camera) and said Barbara :) He was saying to everyone go take your camera and take pictures of Barbara. How sweet is he.
He also loves to dance. It may have looked like he was running in circles but he was trying. So sorry if he messed with your pictures. It so wasn't his intention if you see above. He Loves Barbara and George.
The guy with the Microphone is George. He's a great man ans I'm sure Barbara will be happy with him. I Love you Barabara Williams Pendegrass
Be Blessed

Be Blessed
