What was that you said?

Now that I got your attention, I'll explain.
Have you ever been in a conversation where the other person was speaking, but what they were saying was totally different from what you were hearing.
Today we went to Antioch church, because occasionally Andrew and I go through what we call "friend withdrawal". Most of them go there...
This week end has been long due to the holiday and due to a wedding we attended. I will be featuring her wedding here later in this week(so she can read about it).
Both the kids were simply exhausted from the glorious time yesterday, this affected their behavior today. Jonathan was restless and could not deal well with transitions (going from all out worship to sitting still).
Daniel was just sleepy and that was in my opinion okay but not cranky although he makes a lot of noise.
Several friends slipped of on a mission to deliver food they had collected to a house unknown to them. They asked in prayer where to take it and got unbelievable answers.
The speakers got up to speak and then this is where I got messed with in the way I previously mentioned.
The overall message was on thankfulness... She was relating a story out of a book she read about how a mom was at the hospital beside her son who was on his death bed. The Whole situation turned when they became thankful and was just Thanking God for everything.
Only thing was, I wasn't hearing this story, I was being reminded of our story with Jonathan...It was like hearing someone tell my story of everything I felt and did only it was my own voice. It was almost audible and it was loud to me. Often times in my own faith God will "speak" to me prophetically in this way. You may or may not believe me but I am nowhere close to being a weirdo.
I wouldn't have even given it another thought because I try to limit thinking about it to every so often; otherwise I would be a sobbing, blubbering mess unable to function.
At this point this was messing with me totally. I was a mess. I was crying and everything. It was a numb kid of sting so I know it had to have been God at work.
I know I am shortening this a bunch but that is what happened.
We left shortly after(not due to not wanting to socialize) due to our kids were exhausted and acting out due to being tired.
I'll recover but it was simply no accident we were there this week end.

We're going to this... (it's a few blocks to our house) Be blessed

From Our Family to Yours

Welcome to Thanksgiving~2009~~

Thanksgiving Pictures, Images and Photos

We have a lot to be thankful for...
Our family, our friends... Not to mention our kids Daniel and Jonathan.
Jonathan is talking more and more. Daniel saying in the best way ever "I did it" after turning on the fan by turning a knob..

We are thankful for every day we have.
This Year Heaven welcomed: My Grandfather, Larry Wentz(a friend) and Victoria Martinsen(whom we had been praying for)

Praying for: Fred Pitts (friend) and Cynthia Kelley's Dad.

If you pray at all and need something to pray for. Pray for Daniel. He has had a cough going on 3 weeks and we are throwing everything we have at it.
Please Cold/FLU/H1N1 Season GO AWAY!
Jonathan has been breaking out in hives and we are clueless as to why or how to make him better. I will be camping out next week in our Pediatric Allergy office to get an answer as to why they won't return phone calls to both me and our pharmacy. now we need a steroid to calm his skin down.

Always be Thankful even for late season Flowers and lots of leaves on the ground that makes us all sneeze...Diana and the flowers - 09.09.2009 Pictures, Images and Photosfalling leaves Pictures, Images and Photos

Fight For Preemies- November 17,2009

Fight for Preemies. Nov. 17th

I thought long and hard about what to write.

I know that there will be many people telling their own “preemie” stories of survival. There are way too many in my opinion.
I have many friends who themselves have been touched by having a preemie so many that it seems unfair that I cannot say all of their kids names and when they were born.

Our story is about prematurity. But most importantly it is also about things you can do to help preemies everywhere.
1.Give to The March of Dimes.
I can't think of any other organization that is doing more to find, cure and prevent what ever is causing prematurity and birth defects. March for Babies is held in many locations around the country.
2.IF you are a woman of child-bearing age: Please take a multivitamin that contains folic acid every day. Most of the important development of a baby takes place even before a pregnancy test can tell you if you are pregnant.
3.If you are pregnant. Please get adequate prenatal care. Although there is no way to guarantee you won't have a preemie, having adequate and regular care can limit the severity if not eliminate it altogether.
4.This one everyone will agree with me on. Please don't do drugs or smoke while you are pregnant. You wouldn't put your drink in a bottle and give it to your baby or give him/her a drag off your cigarette. I hope you wouldn't at least.

5. If you know someone going through the experience of having a sick preemie in the nicu...Please do offer to do something practical for them.(water their plants, mow their lawn, take care of laundry) and if you pray tell them you are praying for them. Give them a hug and listen to them...If needed let them cry without feeling judged. Make them know they are loved, because odds are they really don't feel that way. Encourage them to take pictures every day and connect with their baby even in a small way.
6. If there is any gifts that came in handy that I appreciated. It was the little things. Gift cards for food, Gas cards, hand lotion and a disposable camera parents can leave for the nurses to take pictures with while the parents aren't there. a hug, a smile, even a celebration dance when things were super.

Our story is about how prematurity touched us. In late 2005 we became pregnant after having a miscarriage. We sought care as soon as we knew we were pregnant. I went to every appointment that was scheduled. When we were 18 weeks along we had an ultrasound and found out we were having a little boy who we would name Jonathan.
We did not have any problems at all in the pregnancy other than my standard sinus infection , morning sickness etc.
When it came time to deliver at the end of the pregnancy I was told by my doctor I needed a c-section. At the time I was 38 weeks. My husband and I thought okay this baby is as good as here in our arms. We had made it to the end of the term so in our heads we thought we were in the clear.
The day we had him was March 16th 2006. It was a Thursday and it was one of the greatest days we had been looking forward to seeing in the 8 years we had been married.
Everything worked like clockwork until they pulled him out of me. We were waiting and expecting to hear crying; instead what we saw was a baby that was blue and having trouble breathing..
Several hours later he was admitted to a level 3 Neonatal Intensive care unit, intubated and placed on a ventilator, that was trying to breath for him. He was given 3 doses of surfactant (which opens the lungs so air can get in). After getting the surfactant doses we discovered that he had a collection of air in his chest called a pneumothorax. He soon after I yelled at the neonatal staff to fix this and then come tell me placed a tube in his chest to drain the air/blood out.
His lungs were severely premature even though he was born at 39 weeks and 5 days (Term is 40 and we were close enough according to everything our doctor had studied). He had a thing in his heart that in most babies is supposed to close before or right after delivery. He had a resulting heart murmur which no one could explain.
The neonatoligists at the hospital we had delivered at were truly beyond their ability to care for him so on Day 6 they transferred Jonathan via neonatal ambulance across town to the area's highest level Neonatal Intensive Care unit capable of doing a lung bypass called ECMO.
This was supposed to be the day we were at home with him; instead we were mentally bracing ourselves for what ever may lay ahead for him. We did not know if he was going to live or die and this was so terrifying.
We were called and notified that they were transferring him to another better place and that they would be calling us after his arrival. We all breathed a sigh a temporary relief when they told us this as it seemed they had no clue as to how to treat him.
When we were called again and told he had made the trip...we made the trip to the hospital ourselves to see him.
He was placed on a oscillating ventilator and given drugs that paralyzed him so the machine could do the breathing for him.
Seeing your baby with all manner of tubes and wires and seeing all the equipment being used to sustain him was very, very difficult. It was even more difficult to hear the doctor in the new place tell us really how bad off he was and how they were doing everything in their power to help our baby. Seeing your baby's respiration rate on the monitor at zero was both amazing and deeply disturbing.Seeing him shake from the ventilator although we had seen it on video was amazing too. It's one thing to see a baby on a video on it, its quite another to have it be YOURS.
Here is MINE

No parent should be in this position EVER.
We had our share of up and downs and even the bad phone call of your baby is not doing well this morning and we might do ECMO today.(GET UP HERE NOW) He was given a last chance of another treatment besides ECMO and given Nitric Oxide. No it's not laughing gas(nitrous oxide).
He spent a week on it and we saw him turn for the better. And saw him open his eyes for us.
The next week we saw him graduate to a CPAP (continuous positive airway pressure) He was 3 weeks old when I was allowed to finally hold him in my arms. Prior to that we weren't allowed to do anything because everything made his blood saturation go down (called de- satting) Everything except for talking to him, singing to him and mommy placing her hands on him or holding his hand.. Those things made the numbers go up.

We saw him get better and graduate to the progressive care unit, where he would learn how to eat and grow.. On May 10th 2006 he graduated form the NICU and came home with us. He came home on an apnea monitor and oxygen until he was 6 months old. He spent 55 days in the hospital.
Our Story

That is not the end of the story for us. We fought hard and continued to fight hard. He continued to work through our obstacles and our developmental milestones that we had missed. I'll never ever take anything developmentally for granted.

In a way sometimes I feel we cheated. Sadly there were families whose babies grew wings when they passed from this world to the next. We were WELL aware of what was going on and how that could have been us being the ones to say our goodbyes.
We are, and will always be very grateful for the care for our baby and for us.

We were able to find out as a result of our experience with Jonathan(through a consultation with a specialist) and an amniocentesis on Daniel before he was born that we have a propensity to have babies whose lungs develop at a slower rate than other babies at the same gestation. This is a super rare than that has only happened to a handful of people.
We will always need a pre delivery amniocentesis and betamethasone (special steroids given to speed up lung development). We will always need to be in a place where a neonatal team can be readily available to take care of our babies. We will always need to be looked after during my pregnancies by special doctors.

Jonathan is a super kid and continues to be the light of our lives. We are amazed every day that he does something new for us. He is continuing to grow and develop on his own schedule. If you need a picture look at our sidebar.
The only reminders of our NICU journey is a tiny little scar under his armpit from his chest tube.
Other than that we LOVE him to pieces and love the people and places we have gotten to know because of our Journey.
But there are two sayings around our house: There's the "right" way, the wrong way, and then there's the Hoover way(which is almost always a path NO one has ever traveled. And there's this one. After all we have been through to get to where we are Everything is a GET to and no a HAVE To(so enjoy everything.)

With that Thank you so much for letting me share our story with you. I hope you are richly blessed by stopping by.
Please stop by again and leave a comment. Please do everything you can to fight for Preemies. :)

Life lessons at Three years old

Here you go Jonathan's School Picture

jonathan

Isn't it amazing how much he grows? He's a little man. A crazy little man, but we love him bunches.

Jonathan is in his 3 and 4 year old class at school getting extra attention and love. His teacher has not seen him at his tantrummy(is that even a word?) 3 year old stage 4 fit best. His teacher loves him to pieces. Other kids know his name. He loves to say "morning" (good morning) to everyone in the morning while waiting in the drop off line at school. He makes me roll down the window.
His teacher told me that he does the same thing walking by every class room too.

Although this is terribly cute it is a reminder to all of us how life should be.
We should say good morning to everyone and everyone should be our friends (well, at least at the age of 3)
That's what we're thankful for. a grinning little crazy man who can smile bigger than that.I love his smile.
Sometimes we can still see the happy little boy we brought home from the hospital 3 years ago.
Blessings

miracles

Okay what is a miracle.
A miracle can be something or a result of something you are not expecting.
Babies are miracles. Statistically 50% of pregnancies result in miscarriage within the first 20 weeks of pregnancy.
No I am not pregnant I am just going to tell you about several miracles that happened in the last two weeks.
Both things could definitely trigger as it involves kids.

A fantastic one that has a great ending. A dear friend of ours husband Fred was trying to drive back from High Point.NC (where he works most of the week) to get back to Charlotte,NC so he could see his wife and go see his Oncologist doctors.
Apparently he blacked out while he was driving on I-85 and got into an accident. He was taken to the nearest regional hospital. My friend Darlene was called and I don't envy what ever was going through her head on the way there.
When she got there he was in bad shape. He had a heart attack that caused him to black out but otherwise not even a scratch on him. The car only was scratched down the side as he probably hit the guard rail. He has a blood infection, but due to his cancer treatment his body is unable to fight it off through normal means.
They are working hard on getting him home so he can access his team of doctors and that is the way we are praying.
This should have ended differently but there must have been angels protecting this man.

Here is the other one.
For the last 3 years our family has been following a story of a family who has been battling cancer with their middle child Victoria. We had personally known them while we went to the same church until 2007.
She was a true warrior along with her parents. She held on til the very end until last Sunday Nov. 1. She passed away into the arms of LOVE. She now is dancing in front of The King of Kings.
She was surrounded by her mom and dad while she passed on who told her they loved her. She was a truly a blessed child and her parents are even more of a blessing.

I Do not know why things like this happen especially to the young. It upset me more than anything. How do you explain this stuff to your own kids. We hugged our kids a bit tighter and as always told them we love them.
Something I was reminded of about that situation was that to this family, every day was a miracle they got to hold for just one more day. Even while life spun on around them, they took the time to be a family and enjoy the moment.
While they aren't having a funeral or a memorial people are doing things to recognize Victoria's life. Some are releasing 6 pink balloons, while others have released butterflies, and planted a memory garden.
I hope even if it helps them a little that as they walk through their healing process that they can plant a memory garden. especially something with pink flowers.

Much LOVE to the Martinsen FamilyPink Butterfly Pictures, Images and Photos

Be blessed and hug your loved ones tighter today.

October 31st and growing Daniel

Jonathan's costume...
Photobucket
Jonathan- THe mouse from If You Give a mouse a cookie. his preschool had a dress up as a favorite book Character Day. We could support that. We didn't want to dress him up as Thomas because he'd torture his teachers.
We don't as a rule celebrate halloween. Halloween was and is a pagan holiday that our culture has adopted.. Normally we just turn off all of the lights and watch a movie. We aren't hiding from the holiday. If you want to celebrate it, go ahead. We were hiding from Trick or treaters or the wierdos in my neighborhood.

Next~ First Haircut for Daniel

After

We totally did a double take. It's unbelievable how much he looks like his brother!
It took us a day or so to get used to looking at him in his new hair style.

OK 15 month Stats:

He weighs: 28 pounds 4 oz (90-95th percentile and is slowing down) YAY :)
His length: 34 inches (over the top of the growth scale)
He is right on track developmentally. Hooray!
We did however get a referral to a specialist to be checked by a pedi urologist.

He's a tall boy!

Be blessed
